COURSE INTRODUCTION
Pre Calculus Honors will provide students with a near-college level learning experience and prepare students to take and be successful in Calculus BC here at MHS or at college.
There will be a strong emphasis on a "multirepresentational" or four pronged approach to Pre Calculus with concepts, results, and problems being expressed in the following ways (which aligns with Calculus BC):
1) graphically;
2) numerically,
3) analytically; and
4) orally and in writing
We will use the TI 83+ Calculator, or other AP College Board approved calculators, (my overhead calculator used for demonstration purposes is a TI83 View Screen) extensively throughout the course in numerous ways including the following:
1) to graph, analyze and compare functions
2) to confirm or enhance computational work or manual graphing/sketching
3) to implement experimentation, and
4) to assist in interpreting results.
Our three main topics of study are the following:
1) A Review of Algebra 2 Topics
2) Math Analysis Topics
3) Trigonometry
Class Announcements
WELCOME TO THE MOORPARK WEBSITE FOR PRECALCULUS HONORS TAUGHT BY MR. SHAPIRO
My name is Robert Shapiro. Over the years I have taught nearly every math class at the junior and high school levels. I will periodically update this site with new announcements.
NEW BOOKS We have new PreCalculus textbook (this is the third year we've used it) entitled Precalculus, 5th edition, Mathematics for Calculus by Stewart, etal.
Students are to bring their textbooks, single subject (only for this class) spiral notebook (try to find graph paper spirals if possible), sharpened pencils, and their graphing calculators daily to class. It is also recommended that students bring colored pencils to class.
TUTORING Project Pride is an after school tutoring program at the high school. Help is available most days after school from 2:30 to 4:30 in Room D-5. There are student tutors as well as math teachers who are available to help with studying, homework, and answering questions.
In addition, I am available 2 days per week at lunch (specific days to follow). Students are welcome to come to room G-4 for assistance on my tutoring days.
I do not know of any PreCalculus tutors in the Moorpark area.
HOMEWORK Please expect 45 - 60 minutes of homework nightly. Do a complete and thorough job on your homework each and every night.
CAL CHAT this website provides worked out solutions for odd problems. You must put in the name of our text and the 8th edition.
College Board is a website that enables you to see upcoming SAT test dates, find an SAT test center, sign up for an SAT test, get practice SAT questions and receive an "Official SAT Question Of The Day" via email.
